This week we continue talking about severe problems in the world. Homelessness is stigmatized, people often avoid the homeless and turn them down when they beg. It is hard to think about it, because usually I do not help.
There are some controversial statements that I’d like to comment on.
Most people who live on the street are there because they don’t want to work.
I don’t agree with this statement. Homeless do not work, because they won’t be hired officially, and if they work illegally, they may be abused, left without money, or paid by food or vodka (as many homeless people are suffer from alcoholism). They are addicts, or ill, they suffer from lack of hygiene, they can feed their addiction and steal, that’s why, in my opinion, employers do not hire homeless.
Most people who live on the street have mental problems.
True. As I said, addictions are the main problem of the homeless. Sometimes there is no escape from it, as people get used to the homeless lifestyle.
But also many homeless are mentally ill, they do not remember their origin, age and name, and so they can not recover their passport.
Society must help the people who have no homes and live on the street.
I don’t help homeless people. I am afraid of them, and usually they need money for a drink. Some of homeless people don’t want to be saved. Of course they should be treated differently, but I can not sincerely say that I believe they want help and nobody cares about them. Society helps the homeless. There are many programs for homeless people. I found out that some organizations allow the homeless to get food and medical help for free, there are shelters where they can sleep. My mom monthly donate money to the volunteer organization in our town which provide free meals for the poor. Not only homeless people come there, but elderly people, families with many children… It is better than just giving some coins for a drink or a dose. Also there are organizations in RF that help homeless people to get a job, recover the passport, find relatives. So, there is a chance to recover and have a normal life again.
